Driving in Glasgow

Scotland · Population 635,000 · 270,000 registered vehicles

Glasgow's Low Emission Zone (LEZ) is the strictest in Scotland. Since June 2024 it has applied to ALL non-compliant vehicles entering the city centre, with no payment option — just a £60 penalty (rising to £120, £240, £480 for repeat offenders). That makes Glasgow more restrictive than London's ULEZ, which is at least a daily charge you can pay. The zone is relatively small (the area bounded by the M8 to the west/north and the Clyde to the south), so most journeys through Glasgow don't need to enter it.

🟡 LEZ — No charge — penalty only

Applies to: all non-compliant cars, vans, buses

Operating hours: 24/7

Glasgow LEZ has no payment option — non-compliant vehicles get a £60 PCN, doubling with each subsequent offence (max £480). Petrol Euro 4+ and diesel Euro 6+ are exempt.

💡 Local tip: The M74 extension is the LEZ workaround

If you're not LEZ-compliant and need to bypass Glasgow city centre, the M74 extension (opened 2011) lets you skirt the southern edge of the city without entering the zone. It's the cleanest route between Edinburgh-bound M8 traffic and the south.

🔧 MOT testing in Glasgow

Glasgow has approximately 380 DVSA-approved MOT centres across the conurbation. Garages in Govan, Springburn and Cambuslang are typically cheapest. The chains around Anniesland tend to have the shortest walk-in waits.

🔋 EV charging in Glasgow

ChargePlace Scotland (the public-sector charging network) operates most of the city's chargers and has been competitively priced compared to commercial networks. Rapid hubs at Silverburn, Braehead, the SECC and St Enoch Centre car parks.

Frequently asked questions about driving in Glasgow

Can I pay the Glasgow LEZ daily charge?+

No — unlike London's ULEZ, Glasgow's LEZ has no payment option. If your vehicle isn't compliant, you simply get a £60 PCN every time you enter the zone (doubling each time, up to £480 maximum).

Is the Glasgow LEZ enforced 24/7?+

Yes — the LEZ operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There's no exemption period.

Can I drive through Glasgow on the M8 with a non-compliant vehicle?+

Yes — the M8 itself is outside the LEZ. The zone only covers the inner city centre area (broadly bounded by the M8 to the west and north, and the Clyde to the south).
